events 2010-2011

Handover 27th June 2011                                                                                A well attended Handover at the Mercure Castle Hotel saw Derek Bishop relinquish his chain of office in favour of David Wheeler. Also elevated were Adrian Stabbins to Senior Vice and David Burch to Junior. During the evening Paul Harris Fellowships were awarded to Catherine MacLinden for services to the The Spencer Denney Centre and Rotarian Eric Carr. The evening saw a review of Derek's year in words and a Slideshow, and a glimpse of David's year to come.

Summer Fayre 25th June 2011

The Summer Fayre hosted a record number of over 50 Charity and trade Stalls on Alexandra Gardens. The weather decided to behave itself more and more as the afternoon progressed and with it came more and more people. Rotary Charities will benefit to the tune of about £4000. The event was formally opened by the Deputy Mayor Councillor and Mrs Colin Raynor.

Duck Race 25tth June 2011

Over 1000 ducks dropped into the water for the fourth running of this popular event. Paul Roache from the Windsor Town Partnership virtually talked the winning ducks across the line and two very satisfied winners of the first Prize of £300 and £100 second prize were contacted immediately.

Paul Harris fellowship 20th June 2011

Beryl Hedges was hosted at the regular Monday Rotary meeting and became the first of this year's recipients of a Paul Harris Fellowship for all her work in connection with the Town and in particular The Windsor and eton Society

President's Weekend in Edinburgh 17th-19th  June 2011                        A train, planes, and an automobile transported 15 people to Edinburgh for the President's weekend. Staying at the Caledonian Hotel it was the start point of two days of sightseeing including Holyrood Palace, The Royal Yacht Britannia and Edinburgh Castle. The weather failed to distinguish (or extinguish) itself until the moment of leaving when perversely the sun appeared for the first time. The various eateries and watering holes provided excellent interludes.

Chris Clark's 'Summer BBQ 12th June 2011

Over 100 people from 4 Rotary Clubs braved a very unseasonal day, to enjoy Chris and Pam's hospitality at their annual BBQ. Well fed and 'watered' the assembled raised over £500 for Rotary Charities from a Raffle and a Duck Race.

Spencer Denney Garage - Progress  Phase 1 April - June 2011

After three Friday work sessions Phase 1 of the proposed extensions is nearing completion. Almost entirely constructed by Rotary members, the new garage now awaits a felt roof and a Roller Shutter door, after which Phase 2 can commence which is to begin to extend and convert the main building to provide more space and additional facilities

President's Lunch -  Queen's Eyot 5th June 2011                          

Over 50 people joined the President and Glenys at Queen's Eyot for lunch. The event coincided with the President's 65th Birthday. The immaculately furnished Dining Room was treated to equally good food, and minimal speeches. After lunch the tradition of singing something to the President was maintained by everyone singing a special version of 'Del' the Builder and Happy Birthday.

Information Meeting - 9th May 2011                          

As a result of the Membership Campaign led by David Shaw, the Club was joined by 9 possible future members. A talk was given by one of the Club's Honorary members, Air Marshal Ian Macfadyen (Constable and Governor of Windsor Castle) about his time in that role. He was followed by Rtn David Shaw who gave a PowerPoint presentation about the opportunities for Service for a Rotarian

Castricum Visit 6th/7th/8th May 2011

A party of WERC Rotarians and their partners enjoyed another weekend being hosted by our Twin Club Castricum. On arrival the visitors were hosted at Dinner Parties in members houses. Saturday saw a visit to Amsterdam followed by the President's Evening Dinner and dance.

President's Boat Trip 30th April 2011

To celebrate the Royal Wedding the President organised a boat trip on the Thames for the members of WERC and Windsor St.George. Members were requested to bring their own picnics which were enjoyed against the backdrop of a perfect if slightly chilly sunset.

Rolls Royce Rally 15th and 16th April 2011

Approximately 100 Rolls Royces of all ages wound their way into the Castle Quadrangle where HRH Duke of Edinburgh was waiting to inspect them as they passed. As with other previous car rallies this also proved highly successful raising some £30000 for The Prince Philip Trust Fund for the Royal Borough, and Rotary charities.

District Conference Weekend, Birmingham 18th-20th March 2011

A contingent of Windsor Rotarians and their partners enjoyed a unique District Conference in Birmingham this year - unique because the whole event and accommodation was confined to two specialist 'Conference' hotels in the City Centre

Elvis is back in the room - 7th February 2011                        

Rtn. Jack Smink in the guise of Elvis Presley made a welcome return to WERC and entertained members and their partners to a short talk followed by a couple of songs. One of his anecdotes related to another Elvis impersonator who called himself Elvis Patel - no relation!

Ramble in Windsor Great Park 2nd  February 2011                          

Damp conditions meant that the intended Ramble over Runnymede was substituted by a further visit to the Great Park.

Burns Night - Castle Hotel Windsor 31st January 2011                          

92 people attended The Rotary Club of Windsor & Eton Burn's Night on Monday. Jim Reid Pipe Major piped in the Haggis & addressed the Haggis. President Derek Bishop gaves thanks to all our friends & members from our daughter Club Windsor St George, Windsor & Eton Inner Wheel Club & The Merry Wives of Windsor plus Geoff Kidd & his friends from Round Table & 41 Club.

Mayoral Visit 17th January 2011                                                        Councillor Mrs Catherine Bursnall Madame Mayor of The Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead together with her Officer Fred Simmonds visited the Club for their lunchtime meeting. David Wheeler Vice President was in charge supported by Adrian Stabbins the Junior Vice President. Mrs Bursnall & Fred gave a very interesting talk about the Mayor's regalia  L to R - Adrian Stabbins, Catherine Bursnall, Fred Simmonds, David Wheeler.

First Schools Concert 2nd December 2010                          

First Schools from all over Windsor collected into a single choir at the Parish Church to perform Carols from many countries most of them in their native language. The Concert was very well supported by families and friends of the children who helped out with choruses when required.

Ramble in Windsor Great Park 1st December 2010                          

Six hardy souls braved freezing biting winds for the Club's monthly Ramble in the Great Park led this time by Neil Aufflick. A nip from a hip flask and hot soup in the Fox and hounds completed an exhilarating morning.

Meeting 29th November 2010                          

Good friend of President Derek, Richard Anderson, entertained the Club on the fifth Monday evening meeting. The theme of his talk was 'What do you think it is' and comprised a quiz where the audience were asked to guess what various curious implements were used for. The talk was a great success and much enjoyed by those attending.

Careers' Fair 26th November 2010                          

The Club organised a Careers' fair at Windsor Girls' School at which representatives from all corners of the workplace (e.g. Financial Services, Marketing, the Army, Solicitors, Graphic Design, Accountancy, Architecture etc.). The event was visited by up to 300 pupils over the day from Local Schools, and College.

Youth Speaks 19th November 2010                          

The first round of Youth Speaks for Windsor Schools was held at Windsor Boys School where 9 teams competed in the two age ranges, and as usual stunned the audience with their skill articulacy and wit. The distinguished band of Judges awarded Brigidine the Senior Prize, and St Edwards Royal Free School were named as Intermediate Team Winners.

Polio inoculation in India November 2010

Adrian and Veronica Stabbins joined a team of Rotarians and their partners in Lucknow India to assist with the inoculation process of children in Lucknow India. They administered Polio drops to 179 children & also distributed lot of gifts to celebrate the Children's Day. The process was organised by the Rotary Club  of Lucknow Trans Gomti.

MacDonald's Hotel Vocational Visit 11th November 2010

A sizeable party of Rotarians and their partners and Inner Wheelers were treated to a guided tour of the newly opened MacDonald's Hotel Windsor created largely from the conserved shell of the old Caleys Department Store. The Club is very grateful for the time and care shown to give guided tours of this impressive new addition to Windsor Hotels

Age Concern Windsor Twilight Ball 6th November 2010                           A truly glittering evening was held at the Mercure Castle Hotel Windsor in aid of Age Concern Windsor. It was organised and beautifully presented by Derek and Glenys who is also Chairman of Age Concern Windsor. Over 150 people enjoyed the sumptuous setting and decor, excellent meal, and dancing. The event, Tombola and Auction is estimated to have raised approximately £6000 for the cause. Click on the photograph right to open a slideshow of the numerous photos

Genealogy Talk by Rtn Colin Coombs 1st November 2010

Colin Coombs gave a fascinating Talk about tracing your family. Colin gave the Rotarians a great insight into how one letter lead him to unveil lots of wonderful information about his Great Uncle previously little was known about him. National Bulb Planting Scheme promoted by Rotary

These furtive looking individuals are not, in spite of appearances, grave robbing. Rather  President Derek and Rtn Bob Heybourn, ably backed up by Richard Cox of Windsor St George, are promoting the National Bulb planting scheme supported by Rotary and various garden celebrities where they aim to plant 15000 crocus bulbs in Windsor alone.

BNO 24th September 2010

Husbands of Merry Wives members who were celebrating their 5th Birthday at the Castle Hotel and Theatre Royal Windsor met at an Indian Restaurant to while away the time until they could dutifully join their wives for cake and Champagne.

Rotary Meeting 7th September 2010

Young sculptor Alexander Devereux lately of Windsor Boys School gave a talk to the Club about how he had created a bronze sculpture with the aid of  funding from the Club. The bronze is now entered for an exhibition at a London Gallery

Street Collection 14th and 21st August 2010

A total of £1250 was raised by the Street collection in King Edward Court which will be used to buy 5 AQUABOXES for the Flood Disaster in Pakistan.

 

Rotary World Challenge Talk 16th August 2010

Katherine Carr gave a talk about her recent trip to Ghana which WERC helped to support. A group of Students from Charters School went with World Challenge  Their aims were to run a kindergarten sports day, organise a Malaria campaign & to build a playground. Katherine raised about £2000 for this life changing trip by arranging with some help from her Dad, boot sales, quiz night & a golf day.

Rotary Evening Meeting 9th August 2010

A 'Who do you think you were?' Quiz was the entertainment at an Evening Rotary Meeting with an attempt to recognise photographs of everyone as children. The highest score of 20 out of 35 is an unfortunate tribute to the effect of time on us all. Derek also presented a cheque to Inner wheel for their help with the Golf Day.

Charity Golf Day 4th August 2010

12 teams of four Golfers competed in the annual WERC Golf Day organised by Bob Pickles. This years winners were The Pin Seekers and President Derek presented prizes after the games. A Dinner was held in the evening in the Eton Masters' Common Room and a raffle was held. The event should raise in the region of £1500 for charity.

Spencer Denney 25th Anniversary 26th July 2010 

More than 50 people including the Mayor joined President Derek to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Centre. The Mayor in her speech gave special thanks to Catherine McLinden for her tireless work running the Centre.

President's Handover 28th June 2010

James Lang handed over his chain of office to Derek Bishop at the Castle Hotel. Also invested were David Wheeler as Senior Vice President and Adrian Stabbins as Junior Vice  

Summer Fayre and Duck Race 2010

The Club's major Fund Raising Event was held on a perfect rain free summer's day, and opened by the Mayor. Over 50 charity stalls did good business, and at 4.00 pm the crowd repaired to the Riverside for the third running of the popular Duck Race.
